Training Your Dog To Walk On A Leash — How Do You Do It?
Whether you've just adopted an older dog or a new puppy, leash training is foundational.
Whether you have just adopted an older dog or brought a new puppy home, you'll need to introduce the lead. Start indoors with no distractions: clip the lead on, mark and reward any movement toward you, then take a step. Keep sessions short and high-reward. Build up to your driveway, then the street, then the park.
The golden rule: never let pulling work. The instant your dog pulls, stop. They learn that pulling makes the walk stop, and loose-leash makes it continue.
